West Indies bowled England out for their lowest Twenty20 total of 88 at The Oval on Sunday to win a dramatic second match of the series by 25 runs and avoid a whitewash.
Chasing a modest target of 114, England collapsed to 60-7 chiefly thanks to GareyMathurin's inspired spell of 3-9 off four overs on his international debut, before the final three wickets fell for just five runs in the space of 12 balls.
The series was drawn 1-1.
Ben Stokes offered England's only resistance, hitting 31 off 23 balls, while the hosts contributed to their own downfall by having four of their last five batsmen run out.
"I think we just panicked," said England's stand-in captain Graeme Swann, whose side won the first match by 10 wickets on Friday. "These guys are good enough to have chased down that score but we played some poor shots and had those four run-outs."
"I think you've got to put it down to pressure ... I thought we did everything right for half the game and everything wrong for the other half."
England's previous lowest Twenty20 total was 111 all out against South Africa in 2009.
Marlon Samuels top-scored for West Indies with a run-a-ball knock of 35 not out as the tourists' inexperienced side - packed full of young players - was restricted to 113-5.
However, their bowlers turned the match on its head.
"We weren't happy with the way we batted but when we were in our huddle, we said anything was possible," West Indies captain Darren Sammy said.
All-rounder Samit Patel was the pick of England's bowling attack, recording figures of 2-22 off his four overs, as West Indies were kept on the leash by some tight deliveries.
Johnson Charles weighed in with 21 off 28 balls but the total looked way short, with England's openers having smashed 128 off 15.2 overs to ease to victory at the same ground two days earlier.
However, Alex Hales (2) and Craig Kieswetter (10) couldn't reproduce those exploits and departed in the opening 20 balls.
Stokes then underpinned the innings as wickets fell around him but he was trapped lbw by DevendraBishoo with the score at 55-6, exposing England's lower order.
The tail pressed the self-destruct button, with the final three batsmen - JosButtler (13), Scott Borthwick (14) and Jade Dernbach (3) - all run out.
"The fielding, which was poor on Friday, improved immensely," Sammy said.
It was a disappointing way for England to finish a home season that has seen the team beat Sri Lanka and India in both Test and one-day series, and climb to the top of the rankings in the five-day format.
"It's been a fantastic summer and there are so many positives to take out," Swann said. "But we're going to learn a lot from this game."
