Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne has announced he is to retire from cricket at the end of the current Indian Premier League season.

Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne has announced he is to retire from cricket at the end of the current Indian Premier League season.

Warne, who has captained the Rajasthan Royals in all four season of the Twenty20 league, announced on his Twitter page that this season would be his last.

"Yes this is my last year playing IPL," he said, later adding: "I've had a great time - but it's time to say goodbye to IPL."

Following a number of messages of support and admiration, he confirmed again that he would be retiring.

"Thanks for kind words re my bowling - but it's 100% my last 4 games of professional cricket unless we make finals - maybe I have 5 or 8 left."

In a glittering career he took a then world-record 708 Test wickets, won the World Cup with Australia in 1999 before retiring after Australia's 5-0 Ashes win over England in 2006/7.

He returned to cricket as player/coach of the Royals in the 2008 Indian Premier League, leading his unfancied side to victory in a final against the Chennai Super Kings.
