Taufeeq Umar was three runs short of a century as Pakistan built a handy lead of 251 over the West Indies on day three of the second and final Test in Saint Kitts.

The opener faced 231 balls for his 97 as Pakistan, who had earlier bowled out the West Indies for 223 in reply to 272, closed the day on 202 for three in their second innings.

Umar played circumspectly, adding 82 for the first wicket with Mohammad Hafeez, who made 32 before he was bowled by darren Sammy.

He then added 76 for the second wicket with Azhar Ali (53) who scored his second half-century of the match, facing 90 balls and hitting six fours before he was caught by Sammy off Devendra Bishoo.

Asad Shafiq could score just four as he was caught by wicket-keeper Carlton Baugh off Kemar Roach but captain Misbah-ul-Haq made an unbeaten ten to steer his side to stumps alongside Umar, leaving the West Indies to rue a disappointing effort in the field which saw them miss early chances.

They had begun the day positively with Roach (29) and Ravi Rampaul (32 not out) putting on 60 for the ninth wicket although their partnership was broken when Roach was trapped in front by Hafeez and the innings ended when Bishoo was caught by Umar off Saeed Ajmal for one.

Off-spinners Hafeez and Ajmal both returned three wickets to put their side into a lead which was then extended by Umar, Hafeez and Azhar.

Marlon Samuels top scored in the West Indies' innings with 57 but that wasn't enough to get his side on terms with Pakistan, for whom Azhar, Umar Akmal and Ajmal registered half-centuries after they won the toss and chose to bat first.

The West Indies lead the series 1-0 following a 40-run success in the opening Test in Guyana.
