Waters is chairman of Fletcher Building Ltd, and a director of Woolworths Ltd, Fonterra Co-Operative Ltd and Westpac New Zealand.

NZC Chairman Chris Moller said Waters had an "excellent working knowledge" of New Zealand, business and sport.

"His combination of executive and non-executive leadership roles within some of Australasia's leading companies will make him an excellent deputy chairman," Stuff.co.nz quoted Moller, as saying.

Meanwhile, CA Chairman Jack Clarke described Waters as a highly credentialed candidate.

"He gives cricket great confidence that we will deliver one of the great sports events this region has seen," Clarke said.

Australian businessman James Strong was last week named chairman of the organizing committee.

The 2015 World Cup will be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
