West Indies trailing behind by 222 runs with five wickets in hand were rescued by bad light on the third day's play after a double blow from Tillakaratne Dilshan in the space of three balls put the pressure on the visitors. Windies finished the abrupted third day's play at 165 for 5 in 45 overs in reply to Sri Lanka's first innings total of 387 for 9 declared. For West Indies, the star of the day was the left handed Darren Bravo who scored 80 from 129 balls with 5 fours and 4 sixes before he was brilliantly caught by Rangana Herath off Dilshan.

Sri Lanka had earlier added 93 more runs to their overnight total of 294 for 5 before declaring their innings just before lunch. Skipper Kumar Sangakkara who resumed the day's play on 135 was dismissed by Sammy for 150. The other highlight of the third day was fast bowler Kemar Roach capturing a five-wicket haul.
