Bangladesh's T20 and Test captain Shakib Al Hasan expressed disappointment at being banned by ICC for two years (one year suspended ban), for thrice failing to report approach from bookies

Bangladesh's T20 and Test captain Shakib Al Hasan expressed disappointment at being banned by ICC for two years (one year suspended ban), for thrice failing to report approach from bookies to cricket's governing body. At the same time, Al Hasan vowed to come back stronger from the setback.

"The way the Bangladesh Cricket board, fans, government and media got behind me is really amazing. If the fans, BCB continue to lend their support to me, I will definitely come back strongly in cricket when the ban ends," the world's leading all-rounder said while facing the media after the announcement of the ban.

According to the ICC, Shakib failed to report two corrupt approaches during the Bangladesh's tri-series also featuring Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe in January 2018. Further, he also failed to report an approach during a 2018 IPL match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab on April 26, 2018.

Shakib accepted all three charges of breaching the ICC Anti-Corruption Code. A dejected Shakib added, "I am obviously extremely sad to have been banned from the game I love, but I completely accept my sanction for not reporting the approaches. The ICC ACU is reliant on players to play a central part in the fight against corruption and I didn’t do my duty in this instance.

"Like the majority of players and fans around the world, I want cricket to be a corruption free sport and I am looking forward to working with the ICC ACU team to support their education programme and ensure young players don’t make the same mistake I did," Shakib further stated.

The charges against Shakib are as under:

Article 2.4.4 Failure to disclose to the ACU full details of any approaches or invitations he received to engage in Corrupt Conduct - in relation to the Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe Tri-Series in January 2018 and / or the 2018 IPL

Article 2.4.4 Failure to disclose to the ACU full details of any approaches or invitations he received to engage in Corrupt Conduct - in relation to a second approach in respect of the Tri-Series in January 2018

Article 2.4.4 Failure to disclose to the ACU full details of any approaches or invitations he received to engage in Corrupt Conduct - in relation to an IPL 2018 match between Sunrisers Hyderabad v Kings XI Punjab on 26 April 2018.

If Shakib satisfies the conditions in respect to the suspended ban, he will be able to play international cricket again from October 29, 2020.
