The India-England Test series gets underway with the first Test in Rajkot on November 9. As a build-up, we look back at England’s last five visits to India. In our second part, we recap England’s tour of India in 2001/02. Three Tests were played during this series, and while England competed well, they still ended up losing 1-0.
1st Test at Mohali: The opening Test of the series was played from December 3-6 at Mohali. India won the toss and chose to field. After inserting England in, India bowled the visitors for 238. Skipper Nasser Hussain top-scored for England with 85 while Marcus Trescothick made 66. The lower-order however collapsed. Harbhajan Singh claimed 5 for 51 for India while Anil Kumble and debutant Tinu Yohannan picked up two wickets each.
India responded with an impressive 469. Wicket-keeper Deep Dasgupta was the surprise success story with 100. Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar chipped in with 80s each. Richard Dawson claimed 4 for 134 for England while Matthew Hoggard claimed three scalps. England faltered again in the second innings, and were rolled over for 255. Kumble starred this time with 6 for 81. Graham Thorpe top-scored for England with 62. Chasing five, India got home by 10 wickets.
2nd Test at Ahmedabad: The second Test was played at Motera from December 11-December 15. England won the toss, and batted first. They did well to finish with 407. Craig White starred with a brilliant 121. Trescothick made 99 while Mark Butcher chipped in with 51. For India, Kumble claimed 7 for 115. Ashley Giles then picked up five scalps as the Englishmen held India to 291. Tendulkar chipped in with 103 while VVS Laxman contributed 75. Hoggard and Flintoff picked up two wickets each.
England responded with 257 in their second innings, built around Butcher’s 92 while Hussain made 50. Harbhajan this time claimed 5 for 71. Set 374 to win, India held on to a draw, making 198 for 3. Shiv Sunder Das and Deep Dasgupta made fifties each.
3rd Test at Bangalore: The final Test was played at Chinnaswamy Stadium from December 19 to 23. England again won the toss and batted first. They made 336. Michael Vaughan was dismissed for 64 handled the ball, Mark Ramprakash made 58 while Hussain and Foster made 40s each. Javagal Srinath claimed 4 wickets for India and Sarandeep Singh three. India were disappointing in response, being all-out for 238. Tendulkar’s laboured 90 was the key. He batted for 198 balls. Lower down the order, Virender Sehwag made a quick 66. Hoggard and Flintoff picked up four scalps each.
England ended day four on 33 for no loss, but there was no play on day five, and the match ended in a dull draw. India took the three-match series 1-0. Flintoff was the man of the match, and Tendulkar man of series.
