Rain gave an abrupt end to an exciting first day’s play of the Second and Final Test between Bangladesh and New Zealand at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. Bangladesh were 228 for 5 in 54.4 overs when rain settled down in the afternoon.

Batting first after winning the toss, Bangladesh lost an early wicket of Anamul Haque to Trent Boult in the 5th over. The homeside were steadied by a 67-run stand between Tamim Iqbal and Marshall Ayub for the second wicket. Ayub got cleaned up by a full delivery from Neil Wagner after scoring a decent 41 from 62 balls with 6 fours.

Bangladesh got another good partnership to boost its total with the pair of Tamim Iqbal and Mominul Haque adding 76 runs for the 3rd wicket. However, Momimul Haque failed to convert his start into a bigger score and got out for 47 (from 59 balls with 8 fours) in a cut shot off Corey J Anderson.

Before the rain arrived, the Tigers lost the key wickets of Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan to give away the initiative to the tourists. Tamim Iqbal missed out on a century when he was caught at gully by a diving Kane Williamson off Wagner. Tamim’s 95 came in 153 balls with 17 fours. Shakib got out for 20, lbw to leggie Ish Sodhi after missing a sweep shot. Bangladesh at stumps are left with Skipper Mushfiqur Rahim (14*) along with the likes of Nasir Hossain and Sohag Gazi to join him tomorrow.
