Like Allan Border, even Glenn McGrath feels that India got trapped into the hype around the Perth Test and thus ended up going in with four pacers.

With Ravichandran Ashwin injured, India went in with Umesh Yadav ahead of Ravindra Jadeja, only the third time in Test history they have gone in with four-pace attack. Australia batted really well on the day to end at 277 for 6.

“They have got caught up in the hype and felt this pitch was going to do everything, bounce, pace, carry, seam,” Glenn McGrath was quoted as saying in various media reports. The green on top notwithstanding, Australia openers added over a hundred without much trouble.

Even former England captain Michael Vaughan felt India missed a trick by leaving out Ravindra Jadeja. “Jadeja’s a wonderful cricketer as well. He’s someone that I’d want in the team. He bats well, he’s an incredible fielder, he will create something in the field and with his bowling he’s just going to keep bowling,” Vaughan was quoted as saying in an Indian Express report.

You look at your three quicks and Ravi Jadeja, as a captain I look at it and you think you’ve got an end tied up against left and right-hand, and if it does start to spin like it did in a Shield match a few weeks ago, he’ll come into his own," the former England captain added.
