The opening Natwest ODI between England and South Africa at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff was washed out due to persistent rain. There was time for 5.3 overs to be bowled though after South Africa had won the toss and asked England to bat first. The hosts were off to a good start at 37 for no loss with Ian Bell stroking his way to 26* from 18 balls with 2 fours and 2 sixes. The match was as such reduced to a 23-over contest.

Following this abandonment, England retained their No.1 ranking in this format of the game. The second ODI between the two sides will be on the 28th at Southampton.
