Rahul “The Wall” Dravid is likely to retire from international cricket if breaking stories from some of the leading news agencies are to be believed! The 39-year-old Rahul Dravid could have well played his last innings for India today and his decision could have been triggered after frustrating failures in the ongoing Test Series in Australia in which the visitors are all set to be whitewashed 0-4 tomorrow morning at the Adelaide Oval!
Australia are just four wickets away from wrapping up the fourth and final Test at the Adelaide Oval which shouldn’t take them long tomorrow morning. Well it has been a disastrous tour for Rahul Dravid as he has managed to score only 194 runs in 8 innings of the four Tests! Dravid’s highest score has been 68 which came in the first innings of the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground that too after facing 187 balls. That knock is the only half century that Dravid has got in the series.
What was more frustrating for Dravid was that he was bowled 6 out of the 8 times in the Vodafone Test Series for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy! It was only today, that Rahul Dravid found out for the second time in the series that he could also get dismissed caught when his thickish edge off a square drive was taken at gully off a full delivery from Ryan Harris.
Rahul Dravid’s scores in the ongoing Test Series against the Aussies are 68, 10, 5, 29, 9, 47, 1 and 25! So for once, Rahul Dravid hasn’t provided the stability at no.3 for India in his long career which began in 1996. Another disappointing aspect is that this failure to Dravid comes after hitting five Test centuries in the recent times against West Indies and England! A similar failure to Dravid came in his first tour of Australia in 1999/00 when a lot was expected out of him but he could only score 93 runs in six innings of 3 Tests with a below par average of 15.50.
As of now, it is learnt from various news agencies that Rahul Dravid has decided to hang his boots after revealing the same to some of his teammates. Dravid could make a formal announcement about his retirement once he gets back to India with the Test Series coming to an end tomorrow. Cricket fans would get to see Rahul Dravid to play in the upcoming IPL season most probably and he could even play for Karnataka in the domestic matches. For now, it seems that Rahul Dravid’s career has ended with 164 Tests with 13288 runs at a great average of 52.31 along with 36 centuries and 63 half centuries. Dravid will be the second highest ever run getter in Test Cricket until Ricky Ponting and a couple of others overtake him very soon.
Well without any doubt, Rahul Dravid’s contribution to India in Test Cricket has been immense! Whether it is to draw matches or win them in any sort of adverse conditions, Rahul Dravid has been the main man and at times has even outperformed Sachin Tendulkar to be the most valued player for India in the longer version of the game!
