The second T20I of the series between India and Sri Lanka has been postponed by a day after India all-rounder Krunal Pandya tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday. The match will now be played on Wednesday, July 28 at the R Premadasa stadium in Colombo. Krunal and eight other close contacts have been placed in isolation. According to reports, the close contacts include Prithvi Shaw and Suryakumar Yadav, who were due to fly to England for the Test series. As of now, no latest COVID cases have been reported from the Sri Lankan camp.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that Shubman Gill, Washington Sundar, and Avesh Khan have been ruled out of the upcoming five-match Test series against England. Opener Prithvi Shaw and middle-order batsman Suryakumar Yadav have been named as replacements. Jayant Yadav’s name, which was also doing the rounds, does not feature in the updated squad. BCCI also informed that Rishabh Pant has joined the Indian squad after recovering from Covid-19. Further, Abhimanyu Easwaran has been added to the squad from the standby players' list.
Former India cricketer VVS Laxman has hailed Suryakumar Yadav for his consistent performances and has stated that the cricketer richly deserves his spot in the India T20I squad. Yadav, along with Ishan Kishan and Rahul Tewatia earned their maiden call-up to the Indian team when they were chosen in the T20I squad announced for the five-match T20I series against England.
A lot of eyebrows were raised were Suryakumar Yadav was not picked in the T20I squad for the tour of Australia. The 30-year-old has been performing consistently in domestic cricket for a few years now. Also, he has been the backbone of the Mumbai Indians’ middle-order for the last couple of seasons, winning them matches from tense situations. His non-inclusion in the team for Australia led to massive criticism from various quarters in Indian cricket.
Rahul Tewatia, Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan have earned their maiden international call-ups. The trio is part of the Indian squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against England. Kishan’s selection came on the day he hammered 173 off 94 balls, with 11 sixes, for Jharkhand against Madhya Pradesh in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Suryakumar Yadav played a responsible knock of 79 from 43 as Mumbai Indians have almost booked their spot in the playoffs. Bangalore were looking set for a 180 plus score at the 15 over stage, but Bumrah pulled back things considerably as RCB had to settle for 165.
